Pralhad Joshi Highlights Push to Modernise Legal Metrology Verification Infrastructure

Worldwide Metrology Day 2026 was observed on Wednesday by the Department of Consumer Affairs, in accordance with an official release. This year marks the 151st anniversary of the landmark Metre Convention, which was signed in Paris on May 20, 1875.

“Metrology: Building Trust in Policy Making” is the designated theme for the 2018 World Metrology Day.

In his virtual talk, Joshi emphasised the importance of metrology in safeguarding justice, protecting consumers, establishing trust in science, and promoting open government.

The minister highlighted that “accurate and reliable measurements form the backbone of effective public policy, trade, healthcare, environmental protection and industrial growth” in reference to this year’s topic.

The department has issued 40 certificates to qualifying commercial firms, strengthening India’s legal metrology verification infrastructure, according to Joshi.

Several important improvements implemented by the department were emphasised by him.

Among these, the Jan Vishwas (Amendment of Provisions) Act, 2026 decriminalises certain minor offences, transitions from a licensing regime to a registration-based system to improve the ease of conducting business, and introduces improvement notices for certain minor breaches.

According to Joshi, the e-Maap webpage is a one-stop shop for all things pertaining to registration and enforcement services offered by Legal Metrology.

Services including registration, weight and measure verification, model approvals, and enforcement-related tasks at the federal and state levels would be made easier through the portal.

Bringing up the Indian Standard Time dissemination initiative, the minister mentioned that the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and ISRO are working together on the issue.

Indian Standard Time (IST) is intended to be disseminated across the nation with great precision as part of the ‘One Nation, One Time’ program.

The significance of reliable measuring systems in maintaining confidence, openness, and justice in government and commerce was emphasised by BL Verma, the Union Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs.

In areas like food, fuel, health, power, and packaged goods, he said, precise measurements have an immediate effect on people’s daily life.

For the purpose of improving accuracy and public safety in medical equipment, Verma brought attention to the fact that standards for non-invasive sphygmomanometers (blood pressure monitors) will be introduced in January 2026.

The theme of this year’s event signifies the increasing significance of trustworthy and precise measures in evidence-based policymaking, consumer safety, and open government, according to Nimuben Jayantibhai Bambhaniya, Union Minister of State for Food and Consumer Affairs.

Legal metrology in India has been steadily growing, according to Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare.
