India-Sweden defence ties received a fresh push at the 11th India–Sweden Joint Working Group (JWG) meeting in New Delhi. The two sides discussed defence innovation, technology, cybersecurity and industrial cooperation.
The meeting focused on strengthening the strategic partnership and turning bilateral cooperation into greater collaboration in defence technology and innovation.
India-Sweden Strengthen Defence Cooperation
The JWG was co-chaired by Meera Mohanty, Joint Secretary, Planning and Coordination, Department of Defence Production, Ministry of Defence, and Brigadier General Dennis Hedstrom of Sweden’s Ministry of Defence.
The discussions covered ways to operationalise the India-Sweden Strategic Partnership. Both sides also explored opportunities to expand cooperation in defence technology, innovation and industrial collaboration.
The Swedish delegation separately met Dinesh Mahur, Additional Secretary (Defence Production), to discuss further opportunities in defence technology and industrial cooperation.
Focus on Emerging Technologies
Sweden’s Ambassador to India Petra Menander recently highlighted the growing depth of bilateral relations. She identified technology, innovation and the green transition as key drivers of the partnership.
The wider cooperation includes areas such as artificial intelligence, connectivity, telecommunications, mining and life sciences.
In defence and security, the partnership action plan includes cybersecurity dialogue, defence innovation and stronger political engagement. The latest JWG meeting reinforces the focus on emerging technologies and closer industrial ties.
The discussions underline the growing scope of this cooperation, with defence innovation, cybersecurity and technology emerging as key areas for the next phase of the strategic partnership.
