Since liquefied natural gas (LNG) shipments via the Strait of Hormuz have resumed, the majority of the provisions of the emergency natural gas supply regulatory order that was implemented during the West Asia crisis have been withdrawn by the Centre. Worries about India’s energy supply have been allayed by the move, which follows a regional truce and an improvement in maritime traffic.
During the crisis, the government was able to control the distribution of both domestically produced natural gas and imported LNG according to a priority customer list. However, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas removed important provisions from the Natural Gas (Supply Regulation) Order, 2026, which was announced officially.
The security situation in West Asia has greatly improved, according to the ministry. The ceasefire measures have been successful, diplomatic conversations are making progress, and shipping via the Strait of Hormuz is back to normal. Reopening this vital sea route has greatly diminished India’s vulnerability to interruptions in its gasoline supplies.
The Essential Commodities Act was used to impose the emergency regulations following a disruption in LNG imports through the Strait of Hormuz caused by military tensions involving Iran, the US, and Israel. Many suppliers had to reroute shipments due to the fighting, which caused worries about the availability of natural gas in India.
Refraining from selling diesel to large consumers and ordering refiners to maximise LPG output by rerouting feedstock from petrochemical units were two more emergency measures imposed by the government. As the energy supply situation began to stabilise, both measures were already removed.
Nearly 88% of India’s crude oil and approximately 50% of its natural gas come from outside sources, making the country extremely reliant on energy imports. One of the most strategically significant energy routes for the nation is the Strait of Hormuz, since almost 65% of LNG imports and 40–45 percent of crude oil imports originate from West Asia.
