Popcorn Maize Hybrid technology has taken a major step forward in India with the launch of the country’s first non-GMO, high-expansion popcorn maize hybrid seed in Andhra Pradesh. Vice-President Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan launched the indigenous hybrid at Musunuru in Eluru district, calling it an important step towards self-reliance in Indian agriculture.

Popcorn Maize Hybrid Supports Aatmanirbhar Agriculture
India has traditionally depended on imported hybrid technology for producing high-quality popcorn maize.
The newly launched indigenous hybrid offers an Indian-developed alternative. It has been developed and grown on Indian soil.
Shri C. P. Radhakrishnan said the initiative could help reduce dependence on imported technology and conserve foreign exchange. He also praised Gourmet Popcornica and participating farmers for developing a solution with global market potential.
The initiative links agricultural research, entrepreneurship and farming. It also shows how domestic innovation can support a more self-reliant agriculture sector.

17,500 Farmers Part of Gourmet Popcornica Network
The Gourmet Popcornica initiative has created a large farmer-enterprise network.
More than 17,500 farmers across eight States are part of the programme. Together, they cultivate nearly 40,000 acres.
The Vice-President praised the journey of Shri S.B.P. Pattabhi Rama Rao and Gourmet Popcornica. The enterprise has grown from a homegrown business in Andhra Pradesh into a major popcorn maize processing enterprise.
The partnership aims to improve market access and create better income opportunities for farming families.
Government Schemes Support Farmers
The Vice-President also highlighted several farmer-focused initiatives of the Union Government.
These include PM-KISAN, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, National Food Security and Nutrition Mission and Namo Drone Didi.
He also appreciated Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister Shri N. Chandrababu Naidu for his initiatives in agriculture and rural development.
These include Rythu Bazaars, promotion of horticulture and natural farming, and other farmer-focused support systems.
From Local Innovation to Global Markets
The Vice-President described the Gourmet Popcornica journey as an example of how a small beginning can develop into a larger vision.
The company’s growth from Andhra Pradesh to a major processing enterprise shows the potential of combining local entrepreneurship with farmer partnerships.

During his visit, the Vice-President toured the Gourmet Popcornica factory and cold storage facility.
He received a briefing on maize processing, quality control, packaging and storage.
