As the second productive exploratory well drilled by the state-owned firm in the basin, Oil India Limited has announced the finding of natural gas in the Andaman Sea.
Continuous flaring during initial production testing validated the current find at the Vijayapuram-3 well, which is situated 15 kilometres off the east coast of the Andaman Islands.
This Eocene-aged well was bored from a starting point 355 meters below the surface in the Offshore Andaman Block AN-OSHP-2018/1 all the way to a desired depth of more than 1,900 meters.
Following an earlier finding at Vijayapuram-2 in September 2025, two of the three exploratory wells drilled in the block allotted under the Open Acreage Licensing Policy have now shown hydrocarbon presence.
The recent string of finds is adding weight to the idea that India’s hitherto unexplored Andaman Basin may become a major player in its energy future.
Hardeep Singh Puri, the Union Minister for Petroleum and Natural Gas, expressed his delight at the discovery, saying it proves the Andaman Sea has enormous energy potential.
