Rajnath Singh Clears Landmark 250 MW Solar Plant on Defence Land in Sitapur

An important step toward enhancing renewable energy infrastructure has been approved by the Indian government: a 250 MW solar power plant with a Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) on defence land in the Sitapur district of Uttar Pradesh. An important step forward in the use of military property for renewable energy production has been taken, as reported by the Ministry of Defence, with the approval of Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.

The Ministry of Defence is describing the project as a first-of-its-kind effort, and it will be built on some 850 acres of empty defence territory. To guarantee a steady and effective supply of energy for military facilities, it will blend battery storage capabilities with large-scale solar power generating.

The ministry has announced that NTPC Limited will carry out the project by holding competitive bidding in order to achieve the best possible energy pricing and to maximise savings in the long run. The project will be carried out in close conjunction with the Directorate General Defence Estates (DGDE) and the Integrated Headquarters of the Ministry of Defence (Army).

In the words of project officials, this endeavour is a one-of-a-kind meeting point for sustainability, technical advancement, energy independence, and national security. The goal of the Ministry of Defence is to generate renewable energy on underutilised defence territory in order to support national development goals and safeguard strategic interests.

To guarantee the project’s timely execution, the Ministry of Defence, NTPC, IHQ, and DGDE will collaborate. After it’s finished, the Sitapur Solar Power Project will be a model for future solar-plus-storage projects in the defence sector and one of the biggest renewable energy facilities in India built on defence soil.

Promoting renewable energy, decreasing reliance on traditional power sources, and attaining sustainability goals are all part of the government’s larger agenda, which the project supports. In addition to reducing spending on conventional grid electricity acquisition, the project is anticipated to enhance armed forces’ long-term energy security.

By lowering energy costs and increasing power reliability for defence institutions, the project is expected to produce substantial financial savings for the government over its operating lifespan.
