Nuclear Energy Capacity to Reach 100 GW in India by 2047

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has set a target of 100 GW of nuclear energy capacity by 2047 as India works to strengthen its long-term energy security. In his Independence Day address from the Red Fort, PM Modi also announced an Rs 85,000-crore push for offshore resource exploration.

He said nuclear energy, critical minerals, offshore resources and renewable power will play a key role in supporting India’s future growth. These resources will also support emerging sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductors and data centres.

Nuclear Energy to Support India’s 2047 Growth Plan

India plans to expand its nuclear power capacity to 100 GW by 2047. PM Modi said the government also aims to start five new nuclear reactors within this decade.

The expansion is part of a broader effort to meet rising electricity demand while improving energy security. Nuclear power is expected to remain an important part of India’s long-term energy mix.

Critical Minerals Gain Strategic Importance

PM Modi highlighted the growing importance of critical minerals for advanced technologies. These minerals are required across sectors such as artificial intelligence, semiconductor manufacturing and data centres.

The government is working through initiatives such as the National Critical Minerals Mission and the Critical Minerals Corridor. India is also pursuing agreements with other countries to secure mineral supplies and strengthen domestic capabilities.

Rs 85,000 Crore Push for Offshore Exploration

The government has allocated Rs 85,000 crore to accelerate offshore resource exploration under the Samudra Manthan initiative.

PM Modi said the programme will focus on identifying new reserves beneath the sea. He also pointed to changes in the approach towards coastal exploration, noting that large areas had earlier been classified as no-go zones.

The move is aimed at expanding India’s domestic resource base and reducing dependence on external supplies.

Nuclear Energy Infrastructure Expands

India has also expanded its natural gas and renewable energy infrastructure. PM Modi said the piped natural gas network has grown from around 70 cities before 2014 to nearly 700 cities.

Piped gas connections have also increased from about 20–22 lakh households to nearly 1.75 crore, according to the Prime Minister.

India’s solar power capacity has grown sharply as well. PM Modi said it increased from around 2 GW about 12 years ago to 160 GW currently.

The government’s energy strategy combines nuclear energy, offshore exploration, critical minerals and renewable power. Together, these areas are expected to strengthen India’s energy security and support the country’s technology and industrial ambitions through 2047.
