The state parliament was informed on Tuesday that the total debt of Assam has climbed to Rs 1.62 lakh crore, a 4.5-fold increase, in the last decade since the BJP took office. “As of March 31, 2016, Assam had an outstanding debt of Rs 35,690 crore,” wrote Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah in response to questions put out by many opposition MLAs.He also mentioned that as of March 31, 2025, the state of Assam’s total debt was 1,61,761 crore, according to the most recent data from the Accountant General.
The minister informed the House that out of the entire obligations, Rs 18,582 crore are loans with a maturity of 50 years and no interest. “Therefore, Assam’s total loans with interest is Rs 1,43,179 crore,” stated he.
In addition, Baruah mentioned that the state has already paid interest to many lenders to the tune of Rs 9,467.75 crore for the fiscal year of 2024-25.
