India Afghanistan Trade was the focus of a virtual meeting of the India–Afghanistan Joint Working Group (JWG) on Trade, Commerce and Investment held on September 1, 2026. Officials from both countries participated in the meeting.
The discussions covered key issues affecting bilateral trade and economic cooperation. Both sides reviewed measures to facilitate trade and strengthen commercial engagement.
JWG Discusses Trade Facilitation and Customs Cooperation
The Joint Working Group discussed several areas linked to India Afghanistan Trade. These included trade facilitation, customs cooperation and visa facilitation for Afghan traders.
The two sides also discussed banking and financial cooperation. Pharmaceutical and agricultural trade were among the other key areas reviewed.
Connectivity and Investment Among Key Discussion Areas
Energy cooperation, investment promotion and trade promotion were also discussed during the meeting. The two sides reviewed tariff concessions, cargo connectivity and port-related issues.
Improving trade connectivity was identified as an important area for strengthening commercial engagement between India and Afghanistan.
India and Afghanistan Agree on Follow-Up Actions
Both sides agreed to pursue follow-up actions in the identified areas. These include stronger customs and data-sharing cooperation and greater regulatory cooperation in pharmaceuticals and agriculture.
The two countries also agreed to work towards improved trade connectivity and greater investment and business-to-business engagement.
Focus on Stronger Bilateral Commercial Ties
The meeting was held in a warm and constructive atmosphere. India and Afghanistan reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral trade, commerce and investment ties.
Both sides agreed to maintain continued engagement and work on the issues discussed through institutional cooperation and follow-up actions.
