In the fiscal year 2025–26, Indian Railways hired 43,781 people, a big improvement over previous years due to the organization’s more open and efficient employment practices. The 47,084 open positions in various categories were filled through successfully completed selection cycles of the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB).
There are 18,799 ALPs, 14,298 technicians, 452 sub-inspectors, 4,208 constables, 7,951 JEs, depot material superintendents, chemical and metallurgical assistants, and 1,376 paramedical candidates among the appointments detailed in an official statement.
At a high-level review meeting presided over by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, the numbers were shared as senior officials evaluated the advancement of the Railway Recruitment Board’s selection procedure.
A more accountable system, faster processing, and cutting-edge technology should be the cornerstones of recruitment, the minister said at the meeting. Recruiting qualified candidates for a wide range of operational and technical positions is an ongoing priority for Indian Railways, he stressed again.
The employment process of the Railway Recruitment Board is one of the biggest in the nation. To ensure that candidates from varied linguistic backgrounds may access the examinations, computer-based tests are administered in 15 languages across multiple centers and cities nationally. Additionally, in order to handle the high number of applicants in a fair and transparent manner, the exams are administered in numerous shifts.
According to Vaishnaw, job-seekers have responded well to the implementation of a yearly recruitment calendar and quarterly vacancy alerts. Candidates are able to better prepare for the hiring process thanks to the organised recruitment calendar, which also increases hiring process predictability.
The minister also looked at how far along the path to computer-based testing (CBT) has been for various departments and pushed for more widespread use of tablet-based tests wherever possible. It is believed that these initiatives will make the application process easier for candidates, shorten the time it takes to fill positions, and increase efficiency.
Increasing the availability of translation services for tests was a primary goal of the evaluation. To make sure that all candidates, regardless of their language background, have an equal chance, Indian Railways offers tests in many languages across different cities and shifts.
The Minister of Railways has ordered the Railway Recruitment Board to improve its contact with applicants and other interested parties. Applicants should be informed accurately and in a timely manner about their status in the hiring process, and he emphasised the significance of quickly correcting any misinformation.
Thousands of appointments have already been filled, and other recruitment campaigns are in the works as Indian Railways updates its hiring process to be more open, accessible, and efficient for job-seekers all throughout the nation.
The dedication of Indian Railways to filling important openings through a transparent hiring method was demonstrated by the organization’s recruitment of 43,781 applicants in FY26. Digital processes, computer-based exams, bilingual support, and annual recruiting calendars are anticipated to substantially simplify future recruitment cycles and enhance the candidate experience.
