India Can Accelerate AI Adoption Without Developing Indigenous Models, Says Rubrik Leader

Dev Rishi, General Manager for AI at cyber resilience business Rubrik, claims that India can become a global tech leader in artificial intelligence even without developing its own frontier models. Enterprises are being held back more by concerns about governance, security, and compliance than by AI capacity, according to Rishi, who spoke to IANS before Rubrik’s annual Forward conference in Las Vegas.

Though the initial surge of big language models was mostly informative, Rishi noted that “AI changing the world” is still in its infancy. He sees a shift from generative AI to “adjunct AI” in the near future, with systems that execute tasks and take actions inside companies driving the next phase. He stressed that this change is the key that will allow companies to get a tangible ROI.

Revealing a new line of cyber resilience products with an AI focus, Rubrik aims to help businesses recover faster from cyber assaults and securely manage AI agents. To further assist organisations in automating incident response while upholding stringent guardrails, the company is releasing connectors for Anthropic’s Claude ecosystem and delivering agent-driven recovery capabilities.

The number one obstacle to implementing AI, according to enterprise CIOs and CISOs surveyed by Rishi, is governance, guardrails, and compliance. “Quality, cost, and orchestration aren’t the issues.” “In order to be able to use AI, you need to use AI itself to secure and govern those agents,” he said, emphasising the need for AI-native security measures to protect against new dangers posed by autonomous AI agents.

When asked about the worldwide AI competition, Rishi rejected a zero-sum narrative, instead projecting that the technology will spread like wildfire and provide ever-increasing advantages. He made an analogy to the development of the internet to make his point, implying that the long-term effects of AI will be “underhyped” now but revolutionary when implemented on a large scale.

India is well-positioned for leadership, according to Rishi, who was born there and has an Overseas Citizen of India card. The country also has a large pool of talented computer workers. He conceded that India’s foundation model development lags behind that of the US and China, but maintained that this was not a necessary condition for success. Rather, he thinks that India can capitalise on “harnesses, context and verticalised applications” to speed up return on investment (ROI) for businesses in industries including healthcare, manufacturing, public administration, and finance.

He went on to say that AI has the potential to immediately improve public sector use cases by reducing agency backlogs in document review, information synthesis, and approval workflows. Accelerating adoption without compromising trust or compliance is possible when that is coupled with strong security and governance structures.

There has been a worldwide scramble among governments and businesses to implement sophisticated models and AI-powered services with the advent of generative AI in late 2022. India is actively working to enhance its artificial intelligence capabilities and promote its wider usage in various sectors, including government, education, healthcare, and business. Businesses and governments, according to Rishi, need to put an emphasis on governance and security, and employ AI to further strengthen AI security, as this is the area where adoption will either plateau or increase.

At Forward in Las Vegas, Rubrik unveiled new products that aim directly at that tipping point, guaranteeing safer and faster attack recovery and better control over AI agents in mission-critical corporate settings.
