The complete Customs Duty exemption on the import of important petrochemical products will stay in force until July 15, 2026, thanks to an additional 15 days of extension from the Central Government.
The Ministry of Finance announced that the exemption, which was originally meant to end on June 30, 2026, will still be applicable to the same list of recognised petrochemical products. The West Asia conflict impacted global supply chains and the availability of vital petrochemical products utilised by many Indian businesses. In response, the temporary Customs Duty exemption was initially implemented.
In order to maintain consistent domestic supply of Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG), the Indian government ordered petroleum companies to focus on producing LPG during the crisis.
To ensure that domestic manufacturers have access to sufficient raw materials, the government instituted duty-free imports of certain petrochemical goods to fill in supply gaps.
The government has chosen to prolong the exemption in order to ensure a seamless transition and prevent interruptions to industrial output, even though the global supply situation has started to improve. The Ministry of Finance states that the exemption will remain in place to show support for India’s manufacturing ecosystem and to guarantee the continuous supply of essential industrial inputs. During a time when local petroleum companies were focusing on increasing LPG output to secure household energy supply, the exemption was introduced as a temporary and focused measure, according to the Finance Ministry.
With the world’s situation showing signs of stabilisation, the extension until July 15 will provide everyone time to prepare for the return to normal duty structures without any disruptions.
Additionally, the government has verified that the list of petrochemical items that qualify has not altered since the previous announcement.
