As part of its electric vehicle (EV) policy, the government of Andhra Pradesh has announced five model E-Mobility cities, marking a significant step toward creating a sustainable and tech-driven urban mobility environment.
As pilot hubs for electric vehicle adoption and infrastructure development, the five administrative regions of the state—Visakhapatnam, Rajahmundry, Vijayawada, Nellore, and Tirupati—have been identified.
The program is a component of the Andhra Pradesh Sustainable Electric Mobility Policy (4.0) 2024-29, and it will be implemented by all Urban Local Bodies according to a plan that was approved by the Municipal Administration & Urban Development Department.
In line with the state’s long-term objective of attaining carbon neutrality in the transportation sector by 2047, the plan seeks to establish Andhra Pradesh as a preeminent center for electric mobility through the promotion of electric vehicle infrastructure, environmentally friendly transportation systems, and sustainable city design.
One charging station is planned for every 3×3 km grid in urban areas and one every 30 km along highways as part of the high-density EV charging networks outlined in the framework. Green corridors, zero-emission zones, integrated transportation ecosystems, and stations to switch batteries are also part of it.
Infrastructure deployment, grid strengthening, fleet electrification, and innovation initiatives would each receive ₹50 crore from the state’s proposed ₹250 crore corpus fund, which will be used to support execution.
Infrastructure for electric vehicle charging and battery swapping, electric public transit, integration of renewable energy sources, and smart mobility planning will all be part of a phased implementation approach. Local implementation will be overseen by Dedicated City E-Mobility Cells.
We have also laid out interventions that are city-specific. Electric BRTS corridors and green tourism mobility would be the areas of attention in Visakhapatnam, while logistics-focused EV infrastructure will be developed in Vijayawada. The cities of Rajahmundry and Nellore have different plans for electric vehicle logistics; Nellore will focus on fisheries and coastal transportation, while Tirupati will work on zero-emission mobility options for pilgrims, including as electrifying the Tirumala shuttle services.
The program is part of the state’s larger plan to create a low-carbon transportation ecosystem, increase urban mobility, and hasten the adoption of electric vehicles.
