The Indian government informed the Rajya Sabha on Monday that E20 petrol has several advantages over E10 petrol, including faster acceleration, a smoother ride, and nearly 30% fewer carbon emissions. Additionally, the government said that real-world vehicle data and scientific studies have shown no signs of engine damage, corrosion, or decreased vehicle life. Suresh Gopi, minister of state for petroleum and natural gas, responded to a question in parliament by saying that the increased ethanol blend allows for cleaner and more thorough combustion, which helps to enhance urban air quality and contributes to nearly zero particulate matter emissions.
Before being rolled out statewide, E20 fuel was subjected to extensive study, according to the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Automotive Research Association of India (ARAI), Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM), Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Indian Institute of Petroleum (IIP), and other prominent car manufacturers carried out laboratory investigations and field testing that were part of the evaluation. Research on E20 petrol found it to be safe for use under specified conditions in terms of engine longevity, drivability, cold start performance, corrosion resistance, material compatibility, fuel economy, and emissions.
The government has also made it clear that there has been no noticeable change in performance or unusual wear and tear in vintage vehicles, even though they were not initially certified for E20 fuel. In support of this assertion, it referenced statistics from a prominent automaker that serviced 2.84 million vehicles in FY 2025–26, including approximately 1.5 million vehicles that were not originally intended to be E20 compatible. The manufacturer did not record any instances of corrosion, abnormal engine wear, or reduced component life that could be attributed to E20. A prominent two-wheeler maker came to similar conclusions, and another big OEM tracked 1.4 crore E20-powered vehicles for a long time and saw no signs of ethanol-induced corrosion.
To ensure the safety and performance of automobiles before they reach consumers, the ministry noted that ARAI continues to validate them through rigorous international-standard testing. The Ethanol Blended Petrol (EBP) Programme in India is bolstered by the government’s findings. This programme seeks to lessen the country’s reliance on imported crude oil, decrease emissions of greenhouse gases, assist farmers by increasing their ethanol output, and encourage cleaner, more environmentally friendly transportation nationwide.
Highlighting the environmental benefits, enhanced vehicle performance, and safety, the government’s recent statement boosts confidence in E20 petrol. With the support of millions of vehicle records and rigorous testing, E20 is poised to be an important component in India’s efforts to achieve clean mobility and energy security.
