As part of its continued dedication to responsible resource management, ecological restoration, and sustainable mining, India plans to scientifically close 147 coal mines in the coming two to three years. The program is an integral aspect of the nation’s Viksit Bharat 2047 plan for the future.
With the help of the RECLAIM Framework, the SUVIKALP digital platform, the ARTHA Framework, and the District Collector-led Mine Closure Advisory Committees, the government has created a strong ecosystem for mine closure, as the minister pointed out. In accordance with the Mine Closure Guidelines, 2025, all closure plans must prioritise sustainability and the well-being of local populations.
A fund of more than Rs 40,000 crore has been set aside by the government to support scientific and progressive mine closure in order to improve long-term social and environmental effects. In addition, community development would receive 25% of the approved mine closure expenses, which means that there is a potential investment of approximately Rs 10,000 crore over the following decade.
Renewable energy parks, water conservation initiatives, eco-tourism hotspots, agricultural lands, and municipal infrastructure are all being developed on reclaimed mine lands. In addition, the Indian government is working with the German agency GIZ to create a sustainable mine closure model based on international best practices.
The successful closure of 42 coal mines, according to Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh, shows how afforestation, renewable energy, ecological restoration, and community-focused development can turn abandoned mining areas into valuable resources.
In order to achieve inclusive growth and the Viksit Bharat 2047 vision, India’s scientific mine closure programme is transforming areas that were once mines into sustainable assets for both the economy and the environment.
