India’s self-sufficiency in defence manufacture and marine capabilities development has been further fortified with the supply of 5,700 tonnes of special steel for three newly commissioned Indian Navy warships by the state-owned Maharatna steel giant, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL).
At a ceremony held at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata, Prime Minister Narendra Modi commissioned three naval platforms into the Indian Navy: INS Dunagiri, INS Agray, and INS Sanshodhak.
The steel that these navy boats were built with was allegedly hot-rolled sheets and plates of special quality DMR 249A grade from SAIL’s steelworks in Bokaro, Bhilai, and Rourkela. Supplying important maritime platforms with specialised defence-grade steel is a testament to the company’s outstanding technological skills, according to the statement.
The steelmaker’s Special Plate Plant at Rourkela Steel Plant is contributing to the increased production of DMR-grade steel plates, which are in high demand in India’s defence sector. These initiatives are in line with the government’s goal of establishing a defence industrial ecosystem that can rely less on imports and become self-sufficient.
Throughout its history, SAIL has been an integral part of multiple indigenous naval initiatives. The INS Vikrant, India’s first indigenous aircraft carrier, and the INS Nilgiri, Himgiri, and Udaygiri, Project 17A stealth frigates, were all built by the same firm. The INS Ajay, INS Nistar, and INS Anjadeep are just a few of the naval platforms that have made use of its defense-grade steel.
India’s defence readiness and self-reliance ambitions were underlined by SAIL Chairman and Managing Director Ashok Kumar Panda. Supplying high-strength DMR 249A steel plates, he said, demonstrates SAIL’s technical prowess in making world-class specialised steel and also fortifies India’s strategic independence.
India has made great strides in bolstering its maritime security through the use of indigenous manufacturing, innovative technology, and domestic industrial capabilities, and the induction of these three naval warships is a major milestone in this regard.
