The devastating earthquakes in Venezuela have left us profoundly heartbroken. Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed the deepest sympathies of the Indian people with the government and people of Venezuela, extending special sympathies to the families of those who have tragically lost loved ones.

Two strong earthquakes hit Venezuela in rapid succession, prompting the declaration. A greater 7.5 magnitude tremor occurred just one minute after the initial 7.1 magnitude earthquake, according to the USGS. Both tremors happened close to the seaside resort of Moron, around 160 km west of Caracas.
There was a high probability of extensive damage and devastation because the earthquakes happened at a shallow depth of about 10 miles. Several areas of Caracas reported buildings collapsing and infrastructure destroyed as a result of the strong tremors felt across the city.
As rescue and relief efforts persisted, Acting President Delcy Rodriguez of Venezuela issued a national state of emergency in reaction to the tragedy, urging the populace to maintain vigilance and composure.
Following reports of damage from the earthquake, Rodriguez also stated that Maiquetia International Airport would be temporarily closed. Helping impacted communities and conducting search-and-rescue operations, security agencies, healthcare workers, and civil protection teams have been sent out around the country.
Diosdado Cabello, Venezuela’s Minister of the Interior, Justice, and Peace, verified that multiple buildings in the eastern section of the Caracas metropolitan region collapsed. Avoid remaining inside damaged buildings, as authorities have cautioned, because of the likelihood of severe aftershocks.
Several cities in adjacent Colombia reportedly felt severe tremors as a result of the seismic activity, proving that its effects extended beyond Venezuela’s boundaries.
Given the magnitude and shallow depth of the twin earthquakes, the USGS has issued a warning that they could cause high mortality and substantial damage to infrastructure.
