Japan investment in West Bengal emerged as a key focus as a Japanese delegation discussed renewable energy, business conditions, air connectivity and cultural ties with state officials.
A seven-member Japanese delegation led by State Minister for Foreign Affairs Ayano Kunimitsu met West Bengal Industry and Commerce Minister Tapas Roy on Friday. The meeting focused on investment opportunities, renewable energy and better air connectivity between Kolkata and Japan.
The delegation also discussed ways to strengthen trade and cultural ties with West Bengal. Roy shared details of the meeting with reporters.
Japan Investment in West Bengal Focuses on Renewable Energy
Japanese companies have shown interest in the renewable energy sector in West Bengal. Roy said the companies want to increase the share of renewable energy in the state’s overall electricity mix.
The discussions highlighted opportunities for greater Japanese participation in the state’s clean energy sector. Renewable energy could become an important area for future investment and business cooperation.
Kolkata-Japan Air Connectivity Discussed
The talks also covered direct air services between Kolkata and Japan. The two sides discussed both direct flights and connectivity through transit points.
Better air links could support business travel, trade and tourism between West Bengal and Japan. Improved connectivity could also make the state more accessible to Japanese investors and companies.
Investors Seek Easier Business Conditions
Roy said Japanese and Indian companies are looking for a “hassle-free” business environment. He said the state government has assured investors of conducive conditions for trade and investment.
Roy also referred to the exit of Japanese chemical company Mitsubishi Chemical from West Bengal. He questioned the reasons behind the company’s departure but did not provide further details.
India-Japan Ties to Get Cultural Push in 2027
West Bengal also plans to organise programmes in 2027 to mark 75 years of India-Japan bilateral relations.
The programmes will include food and cultural festivals. The state government expects these events to strengthen people-to-people ties and deepen engagement with Japan.
Business Outlook for West Bengal
The discussions underline potential areas for stronger India-Japan business cooperation in West Bengal. Renewable energy, connectivity and investment conditions could remain key areas of engagement.
The proposed cultural programmes in 2027 are also expected to provide another platform for strengthening economic and cultural ties between the two sides.
