Varanasi Traffic Relief: Cabinet Clears ₹10,998 Crore, 43-km Elevated Corridor Along Varuna River

Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs (CCEA) has given its approval for a 43.218-km elevated corridor with six or four lanes running alongside the Varuna River in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, with a total capital cost of ₹10,998.32 crore. A vital component of the Varanasi Decongestion Plan, this project will be carried out by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) using the Hybrid Annuity Model (HAM). Its objective is to alleviate traffic congestion and enhance urban mobility.

In addition to connecting NH-31 to the Varanasi Ring Road, the proposed corridor will speed up travel to several important locations in the city, including Kashi Railway Station, Varanasi Junction, Varanasi City Railway Station, Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Ramnagar Port, Sampurnanand Sanskrit University, the famous ghats, and Varanasi Airport. The route, which can reach speeds of 80 to 100 kmph, will greatly improve everyday commutes and freight traffic by cutting the travel time from NH-31 to Kashi Railway Station from 40 minutes to 20 minutes.

The project will improve access to the Chandauli district, six important logistical nodes, and the Chandauli Social Economic Zone, which will strengthen regional logistics and multimodal connectivity. Constructed in accordance with the PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the corridor will improve the economic infrastructure of eastern Uttar Pradesh by facilitating the efficient transit of agricultural produce, industrial commodities, building materials, and minerals, thus decreasing logistics costs.

In addition to reducing traffic, the elevated corridor will make roads safer, cut down on fuel expenses, and shorten commute times, all of which will help the environment. The project aims to improve the quality of life for both residents and visitors to Varanasi, one of the most important religious, cultural, and economic centers in India. It will also support tourism, trade, investment, and urban development by creating a modern, access-controlled transport network.

A huge investment in infrastructure, the Varuna River Elevated Corridor would revolutionise urban travel in Varanasi and costs ₹10,998 crore. The city would be even more prominent as a transit and tourist hub in eastern India after the project’s completion, thanks to better connectivity, less congestion, stronger logistics, and promoted sustainable economic growth.
