On Saturday, NTPC Bongaigaon reaffirmed its dedication to women’s empowerment, education, and inclusive community development by inaugurating the 5th iteration of its flagship program, the Girl Empowerment Mission (GEM) 2026. Fifty girls, ages 10 to 12, from twelve local schools, make up the largest group to participate in the month-long residential program since it started. Head of Project, NTPC Bongaigaon Arnab Maitra, President of the Bardwi Shikla Ladies Club Kasturi Maitra, General Manager of Operations and Maintenance Anurag Gupta, senior officials, teachers, parents, welfare organisations, and CISF representatives were among those in attendance at the inaugural ceremony. Jaikumar Srinivasan, Director of Finance at NTPC Limited, was also present.
The importance of empowering young girls in creating better families, communities, and a progressive nation was emphasised by Jaikumar Srinivasan, who addressed the participants. He spoke with the participants, gave each of the fifty girls a bicycle, and urged them to keep pursuing their education with optimism during his visit. From July 4th through the 31st, participants in the four-week residential program will get extensive instruction in a wide range of subjects, including but not limited to: academics, leadership, digital literacy, personal development, sports, the arts, health and wellness, life skills, and field trips. In addition to preparing the girls for future leadership positions, these activities aim to promote their physical, emotional, and intellectual growth.
Arnab Maitra highlighted the Girl Empowerment Mission as a prominent CSR effort of NTPC, which is dedicated to promoting gender equality, social responsibility, and education. Ten percent of participants chosen through an independent evaluation get free education at the NTPC township school, assuring long-term educational support. Since its debut in 2022, NTPC Bongaigaon has empowered 210 girls, including the present class.
A lecture by Malala Yousafzai and cultural performances by GEM alums showcased the life-changing potential of girls’ education on the program. One of the most effective corporate social responsibility programs in India aimed at empowering young women, the Girl Empowerment Mission has helped over 13,000 girls across the nation.
