India is maintaining its focus on expanding Wind Energy capacity as it works towards its national target of 100 GW by 2030. Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy Pralhad Joshi said the sector is gaining strong momentum, with India recording its highest-ever annual wind installation of 6.05 GW in FY2026.
Joshi made the remarks while inaugurating the eighth edition of Windergy India 2026 in Chennai. The three-day global wind energy conference is being held from October 7 to 9. It has brought together around 400 exhibitors from more than 20 countries and 500 delegates. Denmark, Germany and Spain are also participating through dedicated country pavilions.
Wind Energy Capacity Reaches 59.20 GW
Joshi said India’s installed wind capacity had reached 59.20 GW as of September 30, 2026. He added that the country is confident of exceeding the previous year’s installation record in FY2027.
The minister said the sector has a strong project pipeline and a supportive policy framework. These factors, he noted, are helping create the conditions for the next phase of growth.
India continues to target 100 GW of installed wind capacity by 2030. The government remains focused on maintaining the sector’s growth momentum and strengthening the ecosystem supporting wind power development.
Sector Gains Industry Support
The minister also highlighted the role of state governments in supporting project development. States were felicitated for their work in land facilitation, clearances and resolving Right-of-Way issues.
The event also saw the announcement of several industry collaborations. These include the IWTMA-BWE Global MoU, the IWTMA-PTB Letter of Intent and an IWTMA-OECD collaboration.
Two reports were also released during the event. These were Energy Transition in Tamil Nadu and Reimagining Contractual Mechanism for Indian Wind Sector.
Windergy India 2026 Brings Global Stakeholders Together
Tamil Nadu Energy Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar attended the inaugural ceremony along with senior officials from the Centre and states, industry leaders and representatives of wind energy associations.
Joshi encouraged participants to use the platform to promote technology exchange, collaboration and partnerships. He said such engagement can support India’s ambition to strengthen its position as a global hub for wind energy.
With capacity already at 59.20 GW and annual installations reaching a record 6.05 GW in FY2026, India’s Wind Energy sector is entering the next phase of its expansion. The government’s focus remains on building capacity, supporting projects and keeping the country’s 100 GW target for 2030 on track.
