6G: India Targets Technology Leadership

India is strengthening its digital connectivity and next-generation technology ambitions, with 6G emerging as a key priority. Union Communications Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia said India’s broadband subscriber base has grown from around 60 million to 1 billion in the last decade. He made the remarks at the 10th edition of India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2026.

India’s Broadband Growth Expands Digital Access

Scindia highlighted the sharp growth in India’s broadband subscriber base over the past decade. He said the expansion has transformed the country’s digital landscape and widened access to connectivity.

The minister also pointed to the affordability of mobile data. According to Scindia, 1 GB of mobile data costs around Rs 8 in India. Lower data costs have supported wider usage and created greater opportunities for people to connect, create and innovate.

The growth in connectivity has also strengthened the wider digital ecosystem. It has supported increased access to digital services while creating opportunities across technology and communications.

6G Ambition Signals Shift in Technology Leadership

Scindia said India now aims to move from being a technology standards taker to a standards setter. He linked this ambition to the country’s progress in mobile technology and its focus on developing greater capabilities in the sector.

Referring to the evolution of mobile networks, Scindia said India had been behind during the transition to 4G while the world was moving towards 5G. He added that “we will lead in 6G.”

The statement reflects India’s focus on playing a larger role in defining the technologies and standards that will shape next-generation connectivity.

India Mobile Congress Highlights Telecom Transformation

The minister also spoke about the broader transformation of India’s telecom and digital sectors over the past decade. He credited the policy vision set in 2014 for building a more connected India and placing greater emphasis on technology design and leadership.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the 10th India Mobile Congress 2026. The event is being held from October 7 to 10 at Yashobhoomi in New Delhi.

The Department of Telecommunications and the Cellular Operators Association of India are organising the event. It brings together stakeholders from the telecom and digital technology sectors.

6G Focus Strengthens Next-Generation Connectivity Push

India’s expansion from around 60 million to 1 billion broadband subscribers highlights the scale of the country’s digital connectivity growth. At the same time, the focus on technology standards and 6G points to a broader ambition to strengthen India’s role in next-generation communications.

With affordable data, wider connectivity and an increasing focus on technology development, India is seeking to move beyond adoption and play a larger role in shaping the future of mobile technology.
