The Cabinet Committee on Parliamentary Affairs (CCPA) has proposed that the Union Budget for 2026–27 be presented on February 1, despite it being a Sunday.
If approved, this will be an unusual occurrence as the government aims for timely implementation of budget proposals. The Budget Session will commence on January 28 with the President’s address, followed by the Economic Survey on January 29.
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her ninth consecutive Union Budget, making it the 88th since India’s Independence. Traditionally, the Budget was presented on February 28, but since 2017, the date has been moved to February 1 for efficiency.
Sitharaman’s historic ninth presentation places her close to the record of ten Budgets held by former Prime Minister Morarji Desai. She was appointed as India’s first full-time woman finance minister in 2019 and continues in this role after the government’s third consecutive term in 2024.
