India is exploring the UAE as a larger source of LNG and LPG while expanding cooperation with Abu Dhabi on crude oil storage and strategic petroleum reserves.
India is exploring the UAE LNG and LPG market as part of efforts to diversify energy supplies and strengthen energy security. Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said India is also working with Abu Dhabi to expand strategic petroleum reserves.
The discussions took place after the 14th India-UAE High-Level Joint Task Force on Investments in Mumbai. The talks cover LNG, LPG, crude oil storage and energy infrastructure.
UAE LNG and LPG Cooperation Expands
India is looking to increase its sourcing of LNG and LPG from the UAE. The two countries are also examining opportunities to develop LNG and LPG storage infrastructure in India.
The cooperation builds on energy agreements announced during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s May 2026 visit to the UAE. The agreements cover crude oil storage, strategic reserves, LNG and LPG infrastructure, and long-term LPG supplies.
India is seeking to diversify its energy sources. It also aims to improve the resilience of its energy supply chain amid changes in global markets and shipping conditions.
Strategic Petroleum Reserves Gain Focus
India and Abu Dhabi are also working on expanding strategic petroleum reserves.
Under a strategic collaboration agreement between Indian Strategic Petroleum Reserves Ltd (ISPRL) and Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (ADNOC), ADNOC could potentially store up to 30 million barrels of crude oil in India’s strategic petroleum reserve facilities.
The proposed storage could include participation in the Visakhapatnam reserve and the development of reserve facilities at Chandikhol in Odisha.
The agreement also covers the possibility of storing crude oil in Fujairah, UAE, as part of India’s strategic petroleum reserve network.
India and UAE Explore Long-Term LPG Supply
India is also exploring expanded LPG supply and trading opportunities with ADNOC.
Indian Oil Corporation and ADNOC are examining a potential long-term LPG sale and purchase agreement. The arrangement could support more stable supply options for the Indian market.
The discussions cover both physical supply and infrastructure opportunities. They form part of wider efforts to strengthen energy cooperation between India and the UAE.
Energy Partnership Covers Multiple Segments
The latest discussions expand the scope of the India-UAE energy partnership. Cooperation now covers LNG, LPG, crude oil and strategic petroleum storage.
For India, the focus is on expanding supply options and strengthening energy infrastructure. For the UAE, the cooperation creates opportunities for deeper participation in India’s large and growing energy market.
The two countries are continuing discussions on long-term energy cooperation as they work to strengthen supply resilience and infrastructure links.
