In response to widespread IndiGo flight cancellations, Southern Railway has announced the operation of special trains and the temporary addition of coaches to accommodate the increased passenger demand across Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
On December 7 and 8, three pairs of special express trains will be introduced: the Coimbatore-Dr MGR Chennai Central- Coimbatore Express Specials, the Thiruvananthapuram North-Chennai Egmore-Thiruvananthapuram North Express Specials, and the Nagercoil-Tambaram-Nagercoil Superfast Specials.
This initiative is part of a broader rail augmentation effort that has reinforced a total of 37 trains nationwide with 116 extra coaches, ensuring over 114 additional trips to facilitate passenger movement.
Most of these enhancements will remain active until December 10, with a few extending to December 12. Specific trains will receive additional air-conditioned coaches, while several, including the Dr MGR Chennai Central-Coimbatore Shatabdi Express, will have extra chair car coaches added. Railway officials emphasized that these measures aim to alleviate travel difficulties resulting from the significant disruptions in air travel.
