SECL Strengthens Focus on Mining Safety

South Eastern Coalfields Limited (SECL) conducted its 50th Tripartite Safety Committee Meeting at its Corporate Headquarters in Bilaspur to review mine safety measures and strengthen efforts towards accident prevention. The meeting was chaired by Shri Neeraj Kumar, Deputy Director General of Mines Safety (Northern Zone), Ghaziabad. SECL Chairman-cum-Managing Director Shri Harish Duhan participated through video conference.

Reaffirms Focus on Safety

Addressing the participants, CMD Harish Duhan reiterated that safety remains SECL’s highest priority. He emphasised strict compliance with prescribed safety standards, the adoption of modern technologies and greater safety awareness at every level. He also stressed the importance of collective efforts to build a stronger safety culture across the organisation.

The meeting was attended by Shri Biranchi Das, Director (HR); Shri D. Sunil Kumar, Director (Finance); Shri Ramesh Chandra Mahapatra, Director (Technical – Operations); and Shri Nripendra Nath, Director (Technical – Planning & Projects). Area General Managers, Area Safety Officers and department heads also participated.

Representatives from the Directorate General of Mines Safety (DGMS) included Shri B. B. Satiar, Deputy Director General of Mines Safety (Western Zone), along with Directors of Mines Safety from the Bilaspur, Raigarh and Jabalpur regions. Officials from the Electrical, Mechanical and Occupational Safety & Health wings of the Northern and Western Zones also attended.

Representatives of the Company Safety Committee from trade unions, including HMS, BMS, AITUC, SEKMS, CITU and CMOIA, participated and shared suggestions on safety-related issues.

SECL Reviews Mine Safety and Accident Prevention

The discussions covered compliance with mine safety standards, hazard identification, risk control, accident prevention, employee training and the training of contractor workers. Participants also reviewed the use of modern safety technologies, digitisation and measures to strengthen the overall safety management system.

Regional General Managers and Area Safety Officers presented area-wise safety updates and outlined ongoing initiatives. Particular emphasis was placed on ensuring that contractor workers receive appropriate training and follow prescribed safety procedures.

The meeting highlighted that safe mining operations require more than compliance with rules. Active participation from employees, workers, contractors and other stakeholders is essential to identify risks, prevent accidents and maintain safety standards at mining sites.

Participants collectively reaffirmed their commitment to improving workplace safety and working towards SECL’s goal of achieving zero accidents.
