Putin: India Remains Key Energy Partner Despite Sanctions

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s recent visit to New Delhi emphasized the significance of energy cooperation between Russia and India, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to provide uninterrupted fuel shipments despite increasing sanctions.

India’s imports of Russian crude have surged, with Nayara Energy among the leading buyers, sourcing over half of its crude from Russia between 2023 and 2025. However, challenges persist, including rising shipping costs due to Western insurance withdrawals and the use of unfamiliar carriers.

Indian buyers are adapting payment methods amid tightening US regulations, employing dirham- and yuan-based channels. Analysts observe that while US sanctions target specific entities, refiners are likely to modify their practices to maintain ties with Russian suppliers, as cheaper Russian crude remains attractive despite the complexities involved in procurement.
