NTPC Seeks Global Buyers for Green Ammonia

NTPC Limited, India’s largest power producer, is in talks with prospective buyers in Japan, South Korea and Germany for green ammonia and other low-carbon fuels, Chairman Gurdeep Singh said on Tuesday.

Speaking at an event organised by the Indian Chamber of Commerce, Singh said discussions with overseas customers were underway as NTPC developed its proposed green hydrogen hub in Andhra Pradesh.

The project is expected to produce green ammonia and green methanol alongside its broader green hydrogen ambitions. These fuels are considered more practical than hydrogen for transportation and international trade, making them potential products for overseas buyers.

NTPC Shifts Focus from Pilots to Commercial Projects

Singh said NTPC’s priorities were moving towards commercial viability. “We have to make hydrogen a business,” he said, highlighting the need to move beyond pilot projects and develop ventures that can operate on a commercially sustainable basis.

Securing Buyers Remains a Key Challenge

NTPC’s discussions with overseas buyers reflect the broader effort by Indian companies to secure demand for green fuels and turn the country’s hydrogen ambitions into commercially viable projects.

Developers worldwide have faced challenges in securing long-term offtake agreements, which are important for supporting investment in large-scale production facilities. Establishing reliable demand is therefore a key step towards expanding the green hydrogen and green ammonia sectors.

India aims to become a major producer of green hydrogen. Under the National Green Hydrogen Mission, the government has allocated approximately ₹19,744 crore in incentives and support, with a target of producing 5 million metric tonnes of green hydrogen annually by 2030.

Demand for green fuels is expected to grow as industries seek alternatives to fossil fuels to reduce emissions and meet decarbonisation targets.
