BCCL Raises Coking Coal Prices by Up to 14%

Bharat Coking Coal Limited (BCCL) has raised the basic prices of several grades of raw coking coal for consumers in the non-regulated sector (NRS), effective October 14, 2026. The company’s board approved the revision at its 447th meeting, held at Koyla Bhawan in Dhanbad on Tuesday.

In a stock exchange filing, BCCL said it had increased the basic prices of the affected grades by approximately 0.1% to 14% over existing rates. The Miniratna subsidiary of Coal India Limited (CIL) described the move as a rationalisation aimed at correcting disproportionate price differences between grades.

The revision covers steel grades I and II, direct feed coal, prime coking coal (PCC) washery grades W-II to W-VI, and high-volatile medium coking (HVMC) washery grades W-I to W-VI. The revised prices apply to the non-regulated sector only. For HVMC coal, the notification excludes consumers in the power sector, including independent power producers, as well as the fertiliser and defence sectors.

BCCL Sets Steel Grade I Price at ₹7,000 per Tonne

The revised run-of-mine (ROM) price of steel grade I prime coking coal stands at ₹7,000 per tonne. Steel grade II is priced at ₹6,500 per tonne, while direct feed coal costs ₹6,750 per tonne.

For prime coking coal washery grades, BCCL has set the price of W-II at ₹4,480 per tonne and W-III at ₹3,700. The rates decline to ₹3,350 for W-IV, ₹2,960 for W-V and ₹2,700 for W-VI.

HVMC coal remains priced below prime coking coal across the corresponding washery grades. BCCL has set the price of HVMC W-I at ₹4,450 per tonne and W-II at ₹4,260. The rates for W-III, W-IV, W-V and W-VI stand at ₹3,600, ₹3,190, ₹2,860 and ₹2,560 per tonne, respectively.

Auction Buyers to Pay the Higher Applicable Price

The revised notified prices will not apply uniformly to all buyers. Under the notification, NRS linkage auction consumers from tranche VI onwards, NRS central public sector enterprises (CPSEs), state-nominated agencies (SNAs) and buyers under CIL’s e-auction scheme will pay the higher of the revised notified price or the modulated price set by BCCL on March 31.

BCCL last revised coking coal prices on April 1, 2026, based on Wholesale Price Index (WPI) indexation. That revision increased prices by 0.24% over the previous year and applied to NRS linkage auction consumers from tranche VI onwards and buyers under the single-window mode-agnostic e-auction scheme.

Transportation Charges and Statutory Levies Extra

The notification states that the prices are on a free-on-rail (FOR) or free-on-board (FOB) basis, as applicable. They exclude additional charges for surface transportation, sizing and evacuation, which will continue to apply in accordance with CIL and BCCL price notifications.

Buyers will also have to pay statutory levies separately. These include royalty, District Mineral Foundation Trust (DMFT) and National Mineral Exploration Trust (NMET) contributions, bazar fee and other applicable levies. Taxes, including GST, will be charged extra.
