The Amba and Kumbhe Pumped Storage Hydroelectric Projects in Maharashtra will now have a combined capacity of 2,600 MW, up from 1,800 MW, according to an amended agreement with NTPC Limited. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis was present at the signing of the MoU, which followed technical evaluations that confirmed the viability of an extra 800 MW of generating capacity.
The capacity of Amba is increased to 1,500 MW from 800 MW and that of Kumbhe is increased to 1,100 MW from 1,000 MW as a result of the changed configuration. The development bolsters Maharashtra’s efforts to integrate renewable energy sources and stabilise the grid, in line with recommendations from the Central Electricity Authority.
This is the 60th memorandum of understanding (MoU) under the state’s public-private partnership (PPP) framework for pumped storage. It adds to a larger pipeline with a capacity of more than 82 GW, an estimated investment of 4.28 lakh crore (Rs.), and the possibility of creating 1.31 lakh jobs.
Maharashtra is aiming to become a national center for pumped hydro storage, driven by its Renewable Energy and Energy Storage Policy (2025-2036). In order to entice large-scale private investment, the program provides incentives such as exemptions on gearbox and wheeling rates, waivers of electricity duties for pumping operations, concessional land leasing, and secured water allocation procedures.
