As part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiative, NTPC Bongaigaon has sent three fully-equipped boat ambulances to the riverine villages in the flood-prone Kokrajhar district, which borders Dhubri district in Assam, to treat residents. This is a huge step forward in the fight for better access to healthcare in rural areas. This program is an attempt to help the people who live in outlying char (river island) areas get the medical treatment they need, which might be difficult to get due to yearly floods and other bad weather.
In a solemn ceremony, the boat ambulances were officially launched and hoisted into the air by Derhasat Basumatary, Executive Member for Health & Family Welfare of the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) and MCLA of Salakati Constituency. Also present were Moon Moon Brahma, Executive Member for Urban Development of the BTC and MCLA of Parbatjhora Constituency, Nilu Brahma, Director of Health Services of the BTC, senior officials of NTPC Bongaigaon, representatives of the District Health Department, healthcare experts, and individuals from the surrounding community. The project, which intends to guarantee ongoing healthcare services for people of Khutabagra and other riverine villages, was implemented with a funding of ₹20 lakh and a collaboration between the Bodoland Territorial Council Government and the Directorate of Health Services, BTC.
Essential medications, emergency medical gear, and basic healthcare amenities are present on board the three specially built boat ambulances. To bring primary healthcare directly to outlying areas, each ambulance will be manned by qualified medical personnel and Auxiliary Nurse Midwives (ANMs).
When regular roads are inaccessible due to flooding, the floating healthcare units can also transfer patients in an emergency. During his remarks at the opening, Derhasat Basumatary commended NTPC Bongaigaon for providing a novel healthcare solution that is specifically designed to address the challenges faced by areas prone to flooding.
During the monsoon season, it can be quite challenging for pregnant women, children, elderly people, and emergency patients to reach healthcare facilities, thus he mentioned that the boat ambulances will greatly enhance their access to prompt medical care.
The program is supposed to fill a serious need in healthcare by guaranteeing that people will have access to medical treatment even if floods last for a long time.
