The development of large-scale green energy projects in Odisha is set to be spearheaded by NLC India Renewables Limited (NIRL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of NLC India Limited (NLCIL), in a Joint Venture Agreement (JVA) with Odisha Renewable Energy Development Agency (OREDA) Limited. This move is seen as a significant development in India’s renewable energy landscape.
The initial phase of the agreement is to build, operate, and maintain green energy facilities with a capacity of 1,000 MW. Subsequently, the parties will investigate potential opportunities for forward and backward integration throughout the renewable energy value chain. As a whole, the partnership supports “Viksit Bharat,” the goals of the Indian government, which include ensuring energy independence and reaching zero net carbon emissions.
Devendra Pratap Singh, CEO of NIRL, and Saidutta Biplab Keshari Pradhan, CEO of OREDA and Special Secretary of the Department of Energy, Government of Odisha, signed the Joint Venture Agreement on June 23, 2026, in Odisha.
Deputy Chief Minister of Odisha Kanak Vardhan Singh Deo, Chairman of OREDA and Additional Chief Secretary of the Department of Energy in the Government of Odisha Vishal Kumar Dev, Director (Finance) of NLC India Limited Dr. Prasanna Kumar Acharya, and other senior officials from NLC India and OREDA were present at the signing ceremony.
After conducting techno-commercial feasibility studies and obtaining the required clearances from the relevant boards, governments, and regulatory agencies, the Joint Venture will concentrate on installing and producing 1,000 MW of renewable energy capacity throughout Odisha, as outlined in the agreement.
This collaboration will help Odisha achieve its clean energy goals by making the most of the state’s abundant renewable energy resources. Solar power, wind power, hybrid renewable systems, battery energy storage systems, pumped hydro storage projects, and other renewable energy technologies are going to be utilised in the development of these projects.
As part of its mission to build a robust renewable energy ecosystem in the state, the Joint Venture will look into possibilities beyond the original 1,000 MW capacity, including green hydrogen, integrated energy storage systems, and next-generation clean energy technology.
The renewable energy division of NLC India Limited, a Navratna Central Public Sector Enterprise run by the Ministry of Coal, is NLC India Renewables Limited. NIRL has been making great strides in increasing its footprint in various renewable energy projects nationwide. These include solar, wind, green hydrogen, battery storage, pumped hydro storage, waste-to-energy, and low-carbon electricity generation.
During his speech, Prasanna Kumar Motupalli, Chairman and Managing Director of NLC India Limited, hailed the collaboration as a major step forward in NLCIL’s plan to expand into renewable energy. To combat climate change and meet India’s ever-increasing energy demands, he stressed the need for renewable energy projects that integrate various technologies.
The partnership brings together OREDA’s institutional knowledge in promoting sustainable energy projects in Odisha with NIRL’s competence in renewable energy development. Odisha is poised to become an emerging green energy hub thanks to this agreement, which will presumably speed up the deployment of renewable energy, attract investments, and solidify the state’s position.
In addition to achieving these goals, the project is in line with India’s renewable energy expansion policy, which aims to diversify the country’s energy sources, make it more energy independent, and boost energy security.
To achieve national climate and sustainability goals, India’s central public sector firms and state renewable energy agencies are expected to form collaborations as the country continues its transition toward a low-carbon economy.
