To commemorate 173 years of Indian Railways, Ashwini Vaishnaw corrected long-standing errors in widely-circulated images by sharing a confirmed archival photo of the ancient Thane railway bridge alongside an early train.
An important event in the history of Indian transportation—the first passenger train excursion in 1853—is closely associated with the Thane bridge. On the other hand, historians have frequently pointed out how common it is for public discourse to feature stylised or misattributed imagery.
Railway aficionados and historians have praised the recently released image as a step in the right direction toward maintaining factual integrity, since it is thought to be one of the oldest authentic recordings.
According to experts, this strategy brings public memory in line with recorded history, which in turn strengthens archival integrity and provides a more trustworthy visual reference to the early years of Indian Railways.
This new information has also sparked debates about the value of citing credible sources when discussing and documenting important historical events.
