India-UAE Relations in Spotlight as PM Modi Holds Crucial Bilateral Talks

Energy security and economic cooperation are likely to take centre stage during Narendra Modi’s Friday visit to the UAE to enhance bilateral relations under the India-UAE Comprehensive Strategic Partnership.

The presidents of the United Arab Emirates and India will meet during Modi’s visit to discuss ways to increase bilateral cooperation in the areas of trade, investment, energy, and people-to-people interactions. Regional and global strategic developments are also likely to be covered in the discussions.

The Ministry of External Affairs states that the purpose of the visit is to strengthen the comprehensive strategic partnership that is based on strong cultural, economic, and political links.

The anticipated conclusion of two significant agreements pertaining to liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) and strategic petroleum reserves by India and the UAE suggests that energy security will emerge as a prominent agenda item. In light of the current geopolitical climate, India is making strides to diversify and secure its energy supply chains through the proposed agreements.

Among India’s most valuable economic partners, the United Arab Emirates has been the country’s third-largest trade partner and seventh-largest source of total foreign investment during the last quarter of a century. More than 4.5 million Indians call this Gulf nation home, so supporting those in diaspora is another important focus.

The six-day, five-country diplomatic tour that Modi is currently on, which will take him across Europe and the Gulf region, begins with his visit to the UAE.

Meeting with King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, and Prime Minister Rob Jetten of the Netherlands is on the prime minister’s agenda after his visit to the United Arab Emirates. The two countries aim to further their bilateral cooperation.

During his meeting with Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson of Sweden, Modi will bring up topics such as trade, innovation, and new technology. Ursula von der Leyen will be joined by the two leaders when they address the European Round Table for Industry.

The prime minister will meet with President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Italy before ending his tour in Norway, where he will participate in the India-Nordic Summit.

The visit highlights India’s focus on deepening energy partnerships and increasing economic engagement with important global partners in the Gulf and Europe.
