The progress of important development and infrastructure projects in the Northeast were reviewed at a high-level meeting in Shillong, chaired by Sukanta Majumdar. The meeting aimed to evaluate the projects’ execution efficiency and inter-agency coordination.
This review encompassed seventeen large-scale projects in various states, including Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Tripura, with a combined approved budget of about 3,108 crore rupees. The North Eastern Region Ministry of Development is using the PM-Ref Portal to track these projects.
In order to speed up project completion and guarantee effective delivery of development outcomes, the Minister stressed the need of timely execution, strong monitoring frameworks, and improved departmental coordination.
While in the region, Majumdar met with North Eastern Council officials, demonstrating the government’s persistence in bolstering institutional mechanisms to propel transformation in the region.
At the same time, Sanjay Jaju, the secretary of the Department of Energy and Natural Resources (DoNER), travelled to various northeastern states, such as Mizoram and Tripura, to assess the progress of the projects and to find any obstacles.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma and Jaju discussed continuing development initiatives while in Mizoram. Key projects, such as the “Sustainable Cultivation of Mizo Ginger USP” project, which aims to boost agricultural value chains and was funded by the North Eastern Council, were approved by the state government with DoNER’s support.
Improved farmer incomes and a stronger rural economy are anticipated outcomes of increased financial support in Mizoram, which has been designated as the “Ginger Capital of India” by NITI Aayog.
Additionally, the Chief Minister brought attention to the need for more openness and methodical application of the 10% Gross Budgetary Support allocation. The Ministry confirmed that they would look into the complaints.
A plan to add 1.7 kilometres to the Khankawn-Rongura Hmun road, which would improve regional connectivity and ease economic activity, was discussed during the infrastructure meeting as part of the North East Special Infrastructure Development Scheme (Roads).
This broader regional push toward public-private partnerships is mirrored in the Ministry’s pursuit of private investment opportunities to upgrade the Thenzawl Golf Resort.
The assessment highlights the central government’s efforts to improve governance frameworks, speed up infrastructure delivery, and promote inclusive and sustainable development in the northeastern region of India.
