Another joint call for proposals centred on recycling EV batteries has been launched by the India-EU Trade and Technology Council, further expanding the sustainable energy relationship between the two countries.
Aiming to promote sustainable recycling and recovery of vital raw materials like lithium, graphite, and cobalt, the program is supported by a financing pool of approximately ₹169 crore and seeks to tackle important issues in the electric vehicle ecosystem. Proposals must be submitted no later than September 15, 2026.
Indian domestic participation will be facilitated by the Ministry of Heavy Industries, with funding support coming from the EU’s Horizon Europe initiative.
Safe and digitalised collecting systems, high-efficiency material recovery, and pilot-scale demonstrations are all parts of the program’s goal to spur innovation in advanced recycling technology. To speed up real-world testing and industrial implementation, a joint India-EU pilot line needs to be built up in India.
Important steps in creating a circular economy and decreasing dependency on imported essential minerals include the management of mixed battery chemistries, the enhancement of logistics, the assurance of safety standards, and the promotion of second-life applications of batteries.
According to Ajay Kumar Sood, this partnership is a huge deal for fortifying key alliances and creating a robust recycling ecosystem in preparation for the future growth of India’s electric vehicle market.
Noting that the program seeks to integrate research with industrial application while boosting mineral security, Herve Delphin emphasised the relevance of battery technology in the global green transition.
Green technology, sustainable development, and the acceleration of clean energy goals are two areas where the two sides’ officials have stressed the importance of the alliance.
