Adani Power Bhutan Signs Agreement for 770 MW Hydropower Project

Adani Power Bhutan has entered into a Shareholders Agreement with Druk Green Power Corporation for the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydropower Project under a 49:51 equity partnership.

Adani Power Limited (APL) and Druk Green Power Corp. Ltd. (DGPC), Bhutan’s state-owned utility, have signed a Shareholders Agreement (SHA) to develop the 770 MW Chamkharchhu-I Hydropower Project in Bhutan.

The agreement was signed on 5 October 2026. Under the arrangement, APL and DGPC will jointly incorporate a public company in Bhutan to develop the project.

APL will hold a 49% stake, while DGPC will hold the remaining 51% stake in the project company.

Adani Power Bhutan Hydropower Project Details

The 770 MW project will be developed on the Chamkarchhu River in Zhemgang District, central Bhutan.

The project will follow the Build, Own, Operate and Transfer (BOOT) model. The concession period will extend for 30 years from the Commercial Operation Date.

Construction is scheduled to begin in the first half of 2027. The project is targeted for commissioning within six years of groundbreaking.

Adani Power Bhutan Partnership for Energy Development

The project forms part of a broader 5,000 MW hydropower development partnership between the Adani Group and the Royal Government of Bhutan.

It follows the 570 MW Wangchhu Hydroelectric Project agreement signed in September 2025.

The partnership aims to support hydropower development and strengthen energy cooperation between Bhutan and India.

Leadership Highlights Energy Security

Anil Sardana, Managing Director, Adani Power Ltd., said the project will support energy security and help reduce carbon intensity. He also highlighted the shared sustainability objectives of India and Bhutan.

Dasho Chhewang Rinzin, Managing Director, DGPC, said the project will strengthen Bhutan’s energy security, particularly during the winter months.

He added that surplus clean power can be exported to India.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Prime Minister of Bhutan, senior ministers and other officials.
