An official announcement was made on Wednesday stating that the project allocation will further establish Andhra Pradesh as a leading center for renewable energy and energy storage in India.
The project, which is set to be developed under the Andhra Pradesh Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024, is anticipated to become a major part of the state’s strategy for next-generation power infrastructure and one of the biggest pumped storage facilities in the nation.
The State Investment Promotion Board (SIPB), which is chaired by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, gave the project the green light.
Andhra Pradesh’s renewable energy balancing and storage capabilities are set to be enhanced with the establishment of the Gandikota-2 PSP at the Lord Balaji Donthi Kona PSP Park in the YSR Kadapa district.
In addition to green hydrogen, advanced manufacturing, electric mobility, and AI-driven data centers, the state’s clean energy ecosystem is anticipated to receive support from the project.
The ability to store excess solar and wind power during off-peak hours and release it during peak consumption hours makes pumped storage projects an increasingly important component of renewable-heavy power systems around the world. This allows for a continuous supply of clean energy.
Government data shows that Andhra Pradesh is becoming a major location for pumped storage developments in India, which is happening at the same time as the country is advancing large-scale renewable energy integration.
Andhra Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, and Maharashtra are just a few of the states where the Adani Group’s pumped storage portfolio has been growing as part of the company’s energy transition strategy.
Gandikota-2 and other large-scale storage assets are essential, according to industry experts, for meeting the power demands of energy-intensive infrastructure like hyperscale data centres and bolstering India’s developing energy economy.
The authorisation includes the allocation of 29.20 MCM of water for the one-time filling of the project and 2.20 MCM per year to offset evaporation losses from the Gandikota reservoir, within the bounds of applicable regulations.
Andhra Pradesh’s Integrated Clean Energy Policy 2024, which aims to create jobs for about 7.5 lakh people throughout the clean energy value chain and seeks investments of nearly Rs 10 lakh crore, will also provide incentives for the project.
Policy stability, expedited approvals, strong transmission planning, and an integrated industrial and clean energy development strategy are the reasons why Andhra Pradesh is still attracting large investments in energy and infrastructure, according to the state government.
We expect to finish the Gandikota-2 Pumped Storage Project in about seventy-two months.
