India’s Rooftop Solar Push Gains Momentum With 40 Lakh Connections Under PM Surya Ghar

Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri announced on Friday that India has achieved a major milestone in its clean energy transition, having connected 40 lakh families to rooftop solar systems through the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana.

The plan is assisting households in reducing electricity prices, promoting energy self-reliance, and supporting environmental sustainability, according to the minister, who characterised the achievement as a big boost to India’s renewable energy objectives.

Puri, who shared the news on social media, explained that the programme, which began under Modi’s leadership, is helping to establish India as a global leader in solar power and giving people more agency by encouraging the use of renewable energy sources.

Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal echoed same sentiments, saying that over 40 lakh households had installed solar panels on their roofs as a result of the plan.

Increasing home energy independence and aiding India’s larger energy transition, he added, is the goal of the effort, which is turning rooftops into assets that generate electricity.

The government has spent a significantly larger amount under the initiative in FY26 (up to March 5), totalling 14,585.29 crore, compared to 7,822.92 crore in FY25.

Rooftop solar installations will be available to home consumers with grid-connected power connections through the scheme’s national portal, thanks to the demand-driven PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, which will launch in 2024.

According to government estimates, one crore homes could reduce their carbon emissions by roughly 720 million tonnes of CO₂ equivalent over the course of 25 years and produce around 1,000 billion units of renewable electricity if they installed rooftop solar systems.

Government statistics show that the states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, and Rajasthan are leading the pack when it comes to implementation.

The National Green Hydrogen Mission (NGHM) is part of the government’s broader clean energy plan; it seeks to establish India as a world leader in green hydrogen production, consumption, and exports; and this development is in line with that goal.
