Sixty thousand kilograms of illegally imported areca nuts were confiscated by the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) in the northeastern region, along with five individuals, as announced on Friday by the minister of finance.
These seizures occurred as a result of operations carried out by DRI in Assam and Mizoram in response to particular intelligence.
The Myanmar-Mizoram border was used as a means of smuggling dried areca nuts into India from Myanmar, according to initial findings. 38Bn of Assam Rifles aided DRI in one operation. These operations have resulted in the arrest of five individuals thus far.
The economic security of the border regions is being undermined and domestic areca nut growers are suffering heavy losses due to the illicit influx of nuts from the adjoining country.
