Maritime and Clean Energy at Core of Growing India–Norway Relations

Norwegian Ambassador May-Elin Stener said that the impending visit of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to Oslo is intended to further improve bilateral ties, and that the two countries are exploring greater partnership in maritime sectors, green energy, and entrepreneurship.

In his remarks prior to the trip, Stener highlighted the increasing economic ties between Norway and India, mentioning that the number of Norwegian firms with operations in India has increased to 160 from 100 in the previous decade. The marine sector is home to about 70% of these enterprises, underscoring its pivotal role in bilateral collaboration.

Both Norway and India have great marine aspirations; the former is a large nautical nation. She mentioned that there are several chances for cooperation and that over 10% of the ships commissioned by Norway are now being constructed in India.

The Sagarmala program, which aims to modernise ports, improve coastal connectivity, and streamline logistics, is one of the main projects that have propelled India’s maritime sector to great heights in the last several years. A package of ₹69,725 crore has been authorised by the government to enhance shipbuilding and fortify the marine ecology as a whole.

Norway, which has a long history of oil and gas production, is now shifting its focus to green energy and is eager to provide a hand to India as it makes its own energy transformation. Companies in Norway are looking into potential collaborations to provide cutting-edge technology solutions for sustainability and renewable energy.

Also praised by Stener as an innovation hotspot was India’s burgeoning startup scene. The number of Norwegian companies seeking research partnerships and business engagements with their Indian counterparts is growing.

The first prime ministerial visit from India to Norway in over forty years will be made by Prime Minister Modi during the India-Nordic Summit on May 18-19. There will be a focus on bilateral discussions and the India-Norway Business and Research Summit, both of which aim to facilitate the discovery of new prospects in strategic areas, during the visit.
