While visiting Suriname, S. Jaishankar met with high-ranking officials in an effort to forge closer ties between the two countries in a variety of fields.
Melvin Bouva, Jaishankar’s Surinamese colleague, welcomed him with open arms upon his arrival in Paramaribo on Wednesday (local time). Following bilateral discussions between the two heads of state, representatives from both nations gathered for the 9th Joint Commission Meeting. The results of the talks, according to the minister of external affairs, will “further deepen and diversify” ties between India and Suriname.
While reiterating the commitment of both nations to enhancing their long-time friendship, Jaishankar also called on Jennifer Geerlings-Simons to convey greetings from India.
He brought attention to the long and rich cultural ties between India and Suriname, a country with a sizable Indian diaspora. Indian indentured labourers, or Girmityas, who died in anti-colonial uprisings in 1902 were commemorated at the Monument for the Fallen Heroes, which Jaishankar visited.
Their sacrifices, he continued, are an inspiration to this day in the fight for equality, freedom, and dignity.
In central Paramaribo, the minister paid honour at the statue of Mahatma Gandhi and also visited the Baba and Mai Monument, which honours the first Indians who landed in Suriname.
