Shripad Naik, Minister of State for Power and New and Renewable Energy, held a bilateral meeting with a delegation from the European Parliament’s Committee on Industry, Research and Energy (ITRE) in New Delhi on September 24, 2026.
The meeting reviewed ongoing India-EU energy cooperation and explored areas for deeper collaboration in the power sector. Discussions covered energy security, power-sector transformation, low-carbon development, nuclear energy, carbon markets and emerging technologies.
Both sides reviewed ongoing initiatives and discussed opportunities to strengthen cooperation. The talks also built on the broader momentum in India-EU relations, including progress on the India-EU Free Trade Agreement.
India-EU Energy Cooperation Expands to New Technologies
Naik highlighted the transformation underway in India’s power sector. He outlined efforts to build a resilient, reliable and future-ready energy system.
India has expanded its non-fossil fuel capacity and strengthened transmission and distribution infrastructure. The country is also deploying energy storage and smart-grid solutions. Other areas of focus include nuclear energy, energy efficiency and green hydrogen.
The discussions identified several areas for deeper India-EU energy cooperation. These include long-duration energy storage, digital power-system technologies and green hydrogen.
Both sides also discussed carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) and nuclear technologies. The discussions included Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) as an emerging area of cooperation.
India-EU Energy Cooperation Covers Carbon Markets
The meeting also covered carbon markets and the evolving carbon-pricing landscape. Both sides exchanged views on the Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism (CBAM) and its implications for international trade and industry.
The discussions reaffirmed the importance of energy and power cooperation within the India-EU partnership. Both sides agreed to continue engagement and exchange expertise.
The cooperation will also focus on deeper technological and institutional collaboration. The objective is to support secure, resilient and sustainable energy systems.
