The Indian government has informed Parliament that the number of public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations has increased substantially to 52,718 throughout the nation. The announcement shows that the government is still committed to helping the electric vehicle (EV) ecosystem expand and speed up electric mobility.
The Lok Sabha’s Minister of State for Heavy Industries responded to a question Fast chargers are available at 16,561 charging stations, according to Bhupathiraju Srinivasa Varma. Electric vehicle owners can anticipate a decrease in charging time and an improvement in convenience with the availability of rapid charging infrastructure.
To improve public electric vehicle charging infrastructure in cities and on national highways, the government has set aside Rs 912.50 crore under the FAME-II program and Rs 2,000 crore under the PM E-DRIVE program. The goal of these investments is to make electric vehicles more accessible and popular.
The Center states that the Guidelines for Installation and Operation of Electric Vehicle Charging Infrastructure 2024 lay out the requirements for a charging network that is both interconnected and compatible with one another, as well as for facilities to exchange batteries. It is now easier for private companies to invest in the electric vehicle charging station industry since the government has categorised it as an unlicensed activity.
The PLI Scheme for Automobiles and Auto Components now includes electric passenger vehicles as a means to increase domestic manufacturing. Incentive payments for eligible manufacturers’ incremental sales of Advanced Automotive Technology (AAT) vehicles, including electric four-wheelers, range from thirteen to eighteen percent.
In addition, the government announced that 14,028 electric buses will be deployed with a budget of 4,391 crore rupees, thanks to the PM E-DRIVE program. Two stages of operator selection have been completed, and 13,800 buses have already been allocated to the following cities: Surat, Ahmedabad, Delhi, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai, and Bengaluru.
The fast growth of electric vehicle charging stations, along with government backing and investments in electric buses and production, demonstrate India’s determination to establish a strong and long-lasting electric mobility network.
