India’s First Hydrogen Train Launched by PM Modi on Jind-Sonipat Route, ₹14,700 Crore Projects Unveiled

Friday, the first hydrogen fuel cell train in India departed from Jind, Haryana, under the flag of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marking the beginning of a more environmentally friendly age in India’s rail network. The 90-kilometer route between Jind and Sonipat can be covered in about two hours by the 10-coach hydrogen-powered train, which is a big step towards decarbonising Indian Railways.

As an eco-friendly substitute for traditional diesel-powered trains, this train uses a 3,200 HP hydrogen fuel cell propulsion system—one of the world’s most powerful—to produce its own electricity while emitting only water vapour. India is now one of the few countries with hydrogen-powered railway systems, thanks to this initiative, which was built and installed using indigenous technology.

In addition to the hydrogen train’s debut, the prime minister also inaugurated and laid the cornerstone for development projects in Haryana totalling more than Rs 14,700 crore. The 157.92-km Delhi-Amritsar-Katra Motorway (Packages 1-5) was dedicated, marking a significant event. It was completed at a cost of around Rs 9,680 crore. The motorway will improve logistics, pilgrimage and tourism by reducing travel times between major cities like Delhi and Katra (now over 14 hours) to six hours and between major cities like Amritsar (now roughly four hours).

In addition to lowering travel times and boosting regional connections, Prime Minister Modi dedicated the Jind-Gohana Greenfield Highway and the Ambala-Kala Amb Highway. The Hansi-Barwala Brownfield Highway Project, which will enhance Haryana’s road network and facilitate the expansion of the agricultural and industrial sectors, was inaugurated by him.

Kurukshetra was the site of the Prime Minister’s inauguration of the Elevated Railway Track, which would improve railway operations and reduce traffic jams at railway crossings. To further improve healthcare in the state, he also dedicated Rao Tula Ram Hospital in Koriawas, Narnaul, Maharishi Chyawan Medical College in Bhiwani, and Pandit Neki Ram Sharma Government Medical College in Bhiwani.

Prime Minister Modi further fortified Haryana’s cultural infrastructure by laying the cornerstone for the Sikh Museum in Kurukshetra. The museum will use interactive technology to display the history of Sikhism, the teachings of the Sikh Gurus, and the community’s contribution to India’s civilisation.

Haryana is now positioned as a key hub for next-generation infrastructure, thanks to the launch of India’s first hydrogen train and the rollout of infrastructure projects worth Rs 14,700 crore. These projects underscore the government’s commitment to green mobility, modern transport, improved healthcare, and sustainable economic development.
