2025 WMO Climate Report Flags Rising Sea Levels, Ocean Warming in South-West Pacific

Following 2025’s second-warmest year on record in the South-West Pacific, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) expressed new worries about the worsening effects of climate change. The most recent climate report, which was released in Singapore, emphasises how the changing oceans are putting millions of people in danger.
Overall, land and ocean surface air temperatures were 0.37 °C higher than the average of 1991–2020, as stated in the study. Marine heatwaves are growing more common, lasting longer, and more powerful as a result of ongoing ocean warming, according to scientists. This poses a serious threat to the health of the ocean.

Coral bleaching, fish death, toxic algal blooms, kelp forest decrease, and aquaculture disruptions are all consequences of these marine heatwaves, which are putting a strain on coastal communities’ ability to make a living, fish stocks, and biodiversity. Extremely high ocean heat content was also discovered in many regions of the Pacific and the oceans bordering Indonesia and Australia, according to the analysis.

Sea levels have been steadily rising, adding an additional 3.7 mm to the total between 1999 and 2025. Concurrently, the area saw ocean pH levels that had never been lower, which indicated that ocean acidification was getting worse as a result of the increased atmospheric carbon dioxide levels.

The study also brought attention to the increasing impact of natural disasters like Cyclone Senyar, which killed over 1,200 people and impacted over 10 million people in Malaysia and Indonesia. Protecting vulnerable populations and ensuring the future of the region requires greater early warning systems, adaptation to climate change, and worldwide initiatives to decrease emissions of greenhouse gases, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).
