UPI Payments to Be Enabled for Indian Tourists in Japan Soon

NPCI International Payments Limited (NIPL) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with NTT DATA Japan, marking a significant step towards Unified Payments Interface (UPI) acceptance in the Japanese market.

The partnership will enable UPI acceptance across NTT DATA-acquired merchant locations throughout Japan, allowing faster checkouts, enhanced customer satisfaction, and business growth.

The MoU reflects NPCI’s ambition to expand UPI to more international markets and establish it as one of the most trusted digital payment systems globally. The partnership is significant as over 208,000 Indian visitors visited Japan between January and August 2024, a 36% increase from the same period in 2024.
