President Donald Trump has ordered the United States to withdraw from 31 UN-linked entities, saying they “no longer serve American interests”, in a move driven by his America First ideology.
The decision bars US agencies from participating in or funding the UN-linked bodies and 35 non-UN organisations. The White House said the targeted institutions undermine US sovereignty and advance “globalist agendas”.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the organisations seek to constrain US sovereignty and are driven by what he termed an “elite multilateral NGO-plex”, adding that the US would cooperate only where it benefits Americans.
Key organisations affected include UNCTAD, the International Trade Centre, the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change, the UN Population Fund, UN Women, and the UN Department of Economic and Social Affairs, along with regional economic commissions.
Many of the bodies are funded through the UN’s regular budget, to which the US contributes 22 per cent. Trump has withheld the $820 million US contribution for 2025 and proposed cutting UN funding by $610 million this year.
The move follows Trump’s withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement and earlier exits from UNESCO, the UN Human Rights Council and UNRWA.
Non-UN organisations targeted include the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change, the Global Counterterrorism Forum, and the International Solar Alliance.
