Powering Ahead: India Becomes 3rd Largest in Renewables, Targets 500 GW

According to Union Minister Pralhad Joshi, who cited the most recent data from the International Renewable Energy Agency, India has surpassed Brazil to become the world’s third-largest installer of renewable energy.

India ranked third in the world for installed renewable energy capacity in December 2025, behind only the US and China, but ahead of Brazil and Germany. This figure was 250.52 GW.

With an unprecedented 55.3 GW of non-fossil fuel capacity installed in 2025-26, the country achieved its highest-ever annual rise, nearly tripling the 29.5 GW added in the previous fiscal. Renewable energy accounted for 274.68 GW of the total non-fossil fuel-based installed capacity as of March 31, 2026, while nuclear power contributed 8.78 GW.

With a record-breaking 51.5% of India’s electricity consumption met by renewables in July 2025, the share of renewables in the country’s power mix has also grown. Complete electricity generation during the fiscal year 2025-26 was 1,845.9 BU, with 538.97 BU, or 29.2%, coming from sources other than fossil fuels.

With half of its total installed power capacity derived from non-fossil sources in June 2025, five years before the Paris Agreement’s 2030 deadline, India reached a significant milestone.

With an installed capacity that has increased more than 50 times from 2.82 GW in 2014 to 150.26 GW as of March 2026, solar energy remains the leader in terms of growth trajectory. Over the same time period, wind energy capacity grew substantially as well, going from 21.04 GW to 56.09 GW.

Solar capacity additions reached a record 44.61 GW in 2025–26, propelled by a mix of utility-scale and distributed installations, such as rooftop solar and PM KUSUM programs. Also reaching a record high, wind energy additions reached 6.05 GW.

In line with pledges made at COP26, India aims to have 500 GW of installed power capacity from non-fossil fuel sources by 2030, solidifying its role as a major actor in the world’s clean energy shift.
