Another landmark in India’s railway infrastructure development was marked on Saturday by the dedication of 75 renovated Amrit Bharat Stations to the country under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme (ABSS). This was done by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. With a total investment of over Rs 1,570 crore, the newly inaugurated stations cover 20 states.
Redeveloped stations under the flagship program have already been inaugurated for the second time nationwide. To speed up the government’s plan to modernise railway infrastructure nationwide, the Prime Minister has already dedicated 103 Amrit Bharat Stations throughout 18 states and union territories on May 22, 2025.
In December 2022, the Ministry of Railways introduced the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme with the goal of turning railway stations into contemporary city hubs focused on passengers, instead of just updating the current facilities. Transportation, urban growth, and preservation of local heritage are all incorporated into the initiative’s tiered master-planning strategy.
The recently renovated stations have upgraded waiting areas, station buildings, air concourses, circulating areas, parking, executive lounges, digital passenger information systems, ramps, tactile pathways and lifts to accommodate Divyangjan travellers. The stations have been thoughtfully built to incorporate sustainable infrastructure wherever possible, while also paying homage to the local architecture and cultural legacy.
A total of 261 railway stations have been built as part of the project as of the most recent opening. The ambitious program aims to modernise 1,340 railway stations across India, making it one of the largest station modernisation programs in the world. Redevelopment work at the other stations is ongoing in different phases.
As part of its larger goal of constructing a world-class railway network that can handle future transportation demands, India is currently undergoing a transition that will supposedly greatly enhance passenger convenience, accessibility, multimodal connection, and urban integration.
